Matado lives with his father and step-mother. His father has not worked for 3 years because he is very ill. Matado's birth mother died when he was still a breast-feeding baby.
Matado (as in Matador..a bullfighter) - was weak and could barely sit up and speak with us when we visited him in his village in October, 2009. We were told by his step-mother that he's always ill with stomach aches and headaches. He also has chest problems which make it difficult for him to breath and he has a visible rash all over his body.
Matado often has no food or drink and has not seen a doctor. At school he's in grade zero (kindergarden equivalent) although he's already 9 years old. He is physically small and frail.
